North American History-Thoughts on 9/22

Class. First, let me begin by saying how proud I am of you for your thoughtful analyses and discussion of both the documents regarding the Establishment Clause and American Imperialism. For me it was our best class yet.

In regards to religion in America, we are not necessarily finished with our discussion. Religion comes up time and time again in 20th century America. It informs the rhetoric and guides the decisions of many Americans. Freedom to practice religion and freedom from religion are freedoms that are invoked throughout American history. By the mid-20th century religion infiltrates American society and the political system to the extent that the Establishment Clause never stops being relevant or challenged. Even this year a county clerk in Kentucky, who refused to issue marriage license to gay couples because of her religious belief, has started yet another conversation on the subject.

The government cannot prohibit the practice of a religion or financially help a religious organization.
Likewise, religion is expected to stay out of government. Church's are also tax exempt in America.
Today's discussion on American Imperialism was fascinating to me. Your analyses and thoughts were incredibly astute. I think it is important to think of American imperialism from the minds of Americans of that time. It is important to try to understand how the politics, race, economics, religion, history, ideology and geography informed people's world view. The people in charge drew on what they knew and thought of the world around them. So what were the people thinking? That is what I hope we can derive from the documents I gave you today.

Uncle Sam (to his new class in Civilization) Now, children, you've got to learn these lessons whether you want to or not! But just take a look at the class ahead of you, and remember that, in a little while, you will feel as glad to be here as they are! Illus. from Puck, v. 44, no. 1142, (1899 January 25), centerfold. Copyright 1899 by Keppler & Schwarzmann. That's all for now. Don't forget about your quiz on Friday. We will start with that. If you have done your reading, attended the lectures and thought about the topics you will be fine. Please take a moment to understand the major points and themes we have discussed.

Do-It-Yourself and Writing Outlines-ECI-2 3305

Hello students!

I hope you had a nice weekend and you are having the beginnings of a great week. I spent time this weekend with my family. It was great.

So this week we are talking about DIY (Do-It-Yourself) projects. We've talked about things we pay people to do that we could do if we took the time to try. We've also talked about projects that we do to save money, to have fun or because we want to learn how.
Do you like DIY projects?

I like to try DIY projects to save money and to learn how to do it. Things like fix the bathroom sink or change the oil in my car. These are things I have done to save money and to feel like I am handy! My wife sometimes doesn't appreciate my efforts. One time I failed to fix the sink properly and we had to call a plumber! The job was too complicated for me.

I've tried to fix my sink. I've succeeded and I've also failed.

What things can you do yourself? Cook, garden, repair your computer, sew? Why do you do it? Are you learning to be self-sufficient? How did you learn? These are questions to consider when preparing for the midterm exam.

Finally, I took a look at your writing outlines today. I am pleased with what I saw. Some of you wrote paragraphs (that were quite good) and some of you followed instructions and made an outline....Like this one:
This student followed instructions and wrote a well-organized outline.

We will soon start writing our first paragraph in Google Drive. But for now find an assignment you want to do and have it completed by Friday. Remember there is QSkillsOnline, the Help Desk or keeping an English Journal. You must complete about an hours worth of homework every week.

Let me know if you have any questions!

The American Dream

Hello History Students!

It has been a great 2 weeks getting to know you and hearing your thoughts on culture. I think with a general understanding of American culture and the American people we will understand the people that emerge and the events that transpire over the 20th century.

We have discussed individualism, freedom, materialism, religion and the pursuit of the American Dream in American society, and we will continue to see how these powerful themes influenced major events and people in American history.
Religion, politics, self-improvement and patriotism all converge in the 20th century.
(Billy Graham and Richard Nixon pictured above.)

In class Friday, we looked at clips from the 1992 film "Far and Away" and discussed the American Dream Data-Based Question (that I handed out on Wednesday). The reason for watching the movie and reading the documents is so we can understand the immigrant experience and how that embodies or rebukes the idea that everyone had the ability to achieve the American Dream at the turn of the 20th century.

Next week, we will look at the documents some more, prepare an essay and begin a more detailed talk on American religion.

I look forward to our conversation.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Study of North America II

Hi class! It was a pleasure meeting some of you yesterday. I hope to see everyone else on Friday!

I am very excited to be teaching American History and Culture in the 20th Century. For my master's thesis, I wrote about school integration in the 1950s and 1960s because I have always been fascinated by Brown vs. Board of Education. As a child, I couldn't believe my parents' stories about segregation in their youth. I am intrigued by race relations and how Americans have struggled to come to terms with race and how to live peacefully in one of the most diverse countries in the world.

Brown changed the landscape of schools and cities. American School systems still struggle with how to keep schools diverse.
We also see America reaching outside of its borders and exporting its goods and politics into the larger world. We will look at how Americans felt about our role in the world and how that role changed over the years. We will also explore how America's role and relationships with other countries have had a profound impact domestically and worldwide.

World War II changed America's sense of self in the world. It also brought massive changes to America.
More broadly, I am also very interested in how the vision of the Founding Fathers has played out over the 20th century. More than 200 years later Americans still follow most of that vision. Over the 20th century America grappled with new ideas and changes in the blueprint that was drawn by the Founding Fathers. We see violence, peace, progress and regression. It is a fascinating century in American history.

The Second Amendment is one of the most controversial amendments in the Constitution.

Please read the first chapter of Understanding American Culture. You will find the chapter in Lecture Support.

See you Friday!

Gathering Sources and Starting Your Research Paper

Now comes the time where you need to be looking at books, journals, newspapers, the internet, textbooks and anything else that might help you with your research paper. Please start now! If you start reading and taking notes it will make your time writing so much easier.

These days one easy way to find primary sources online is simply to Google
"Primary Sources on <your topic>" There is a lot that has been put online by others. I also encourage you to use Yeungnam's Library. Libraries can be very helpful and inspiring!

The whole idea of this research paper is for you to find a topic that you are interested in and then ask a question about it. Think about the essay questions you answered at midterm and try to make one for yourself. You will then use the next few weeks to research that question, find material that support your idea and then write about it. I want to see that you spent the time to research, think, write and properly cite all of your sources.

For now, research and take notes. When you are ready start writing. I want to see some writing by May 22nd. Your paper should not be completed, but you should be beginning your paper.

Let me know if you have any questions. I am in C02-221. Contact me first to set up a time so I am sure to be in my office.

Good luck!

History Research Paper

Hello History Students!

So our next big assignment will be picking a topic for a research paper that will be due at the end of the semester. I want you to pick a topic that we will cover in the second part of our class.

Research Paper Due Dates:
*Friday, May 1st: topic
*Friday, May 8: proposal.
*Friday, May 15: first and second page
*Friday, May 22: third and fourth page
*Friday May 29: fifth and sixth page
*Friday June 12: Completed Paper.

We will be covering the time period between 1780-1900. On our syllabus you will see that we will be covering these topics:

The Constitution
Manifest Destiny and Westward Expansion
Native Americans
Slavery
Civil War
Reconstruction to Redemption
American Society at the End of the 19th Century

Here are some more ideas.

Shay's Rebellion (1786)
George Washington
The Bill of Rights (1791)
Whiskey Rebellion (1794)
John Adams
XYZ Affair ((1797)
Louisiana Purchase (1803)
Thomas Jefferson
Lewis and Clark (1804)
Congressional ban on the slave trade (1808)
War of 1812
Andrew Jackson
Nat Turner
Panic of 1837
Joseph Smith and the Mormons
Mexican American War (1846-1848)
Dred Scott (1857)
Harper's Ferry
Ku Klux Klan
Spanish American War

In your research proposal you will need to have a "research problem." Meaning you need to take one of the topics and attempt to answer a question about it. For example, "Was Columbus a hero or a villain?" Or "What does Mormonism say about America before the Civil War?" Or "Was George Washington a great president?" Once you have a topic and a problem, start working on your proposal. See below:

Research Proposal

1. Title: It should be concise and descriptive.
2. Introduction: The main purpose of the introduction is to provide the necessary background or context for your research problem. In short, try to explain your research question broadly but also explain why it is important.
3. Development: While the Introduction generally identifies the research topic, the Development section attempts to explain to the reader what is important about the topic, why it should merit research, and how you intend to go about the research process.

  1. State the research problem and more fully explain the purpose of the study.
  2. Present the rationale of your proposed study and clearly indicate why it is worth doing.
  3. Describe the major issues or problems to be addressed by your research.
  4. Explain how you plan to go about conducting your research. Clearly identify the primary sources you intend to use and explain how they will contribute to the analysis of your topic.
4. Conclusion: It is important to conclude your proposal with a paragraph reiterating the importance or significance of your proposal. This paragraph should emphasize how your project’s results might contribute to previous historical work in the field or area you are studying.

Good luck!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Answering the Short Answer Questions

Hello class!

Just to write down some of the things we discussed in class.

For midterm exam you should focus on the content and organization of your answer. This is what I suggested:

Write 3 paragraphs looking at the before, during and after effects of the event in question. This is just a suggestion.

For example, we looked at the
1. background of the Declaration of Independence
2. the writing of the Declaration
3. the after effects of the document

This is only a suggestion!

Perhaps you would prefer to write about (in detail) 3 of the main issues of the event in question.

But you could also focus on 3 reasons for the document
1. to form an independent government
2. to dissolve the relationship with Britain
3. to state to the King the colonies intentions

However you decide to organize your essay, be sure that you include details about the events you write about. Explain some of the events as if the reader has little idea of what you are talking about. The more you can say, the more details you can provide and the more you can show me your understanding of the event, the better.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Here are some suggestions from this webpage for attacking the short answer question.

  1. Jot down a quick answer for every part of the question (A, B, and C) directly in your test booklet.
  2. Gather more support than you think you need. You need to know general details and major highlights of the topics presented as well as basic cause and effect. You do NOT need to know obscure facts.
  3. Think about how each part of the question and your examples fit together. This will help you formulate a brief topic sentence to make sure that your answer is structured and succinctly communicates your ideas.
  4. Put it all together into a direct, well-supported short answer. Resist the urge to list all of the examples you recall. Make sure your support proves your point, that it all relates clearly, and that you have directly answered all parts of the question.

North American History Recap 4/6

Hello class!

Last week's class
Last week we watched Episode 2 of the John Adams mini-series called "Independence." I think this movie did an excellent job of capturing the mood of many of the Founding Fathers regarding whether or not to declare independence from Great Britain. I hope you enjoyed it.

I think John Adams also serves as a reminder that history is much more complex than we sometimes make it out to be. America declared its independence and fought in the Revolutionary War, but not everyone agreed it was the right thing to do and many people's lives did not change after the War. However, it remains a significant event because of the events that led to it and how it changed and shaped, and continues to shape, America's development.

Essays
I am finishing your essays today and we have lots to talk about regarding historical writing. I intentionally let you write without much instruction so I could see what we need to work on most. I can say that we all need to work on:

1. Using our own words.
2. Citations.
3. Staying on topic.
4. Supporting claims with evidence.

We will talk more about his in class this week and hopefully our next paper will be better. Many of you have great ideas and clearly made an effort in this assignment.

Tuesday and Friday
Remember to look over the handout on the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War that I gave you on Friday. We will discuss that, discuss your papers and review this week. We will take a quick glance at the Constitution and Review for our exam.

I hope you had a great weekend!

North American History Recap 3/31

Hello class!

I look forward to hearing your thoughts, questions and discussion on American slavery tomorrow (Friday, April 3). It is an incredibly ugly time in American history that deserves our attention, reflection, discussion and understanding. Please remember to look over the documents and questions I gave you on Tuesday and be ready to discuss your findings. Lets do our best to understand this very "peculiar institution."

This is the video we watched in class.

I also asked you to think about these questions:

1. Why do you think American slavery last so long?

2. How do you think white colonists/Americans justified the institution of slavery?

3. How do you think slaves survived or maintained an identity under slavery?

I am looking over your essays today and this weekend. I hope to have some good feedback for you next week so we can start on another essay before midterm exams.

See you tomorrow!

We finished the week identifying topic sentences in other paragraphs and preparing topic sentences of our own.

Be ready next week to begin with Listening and Speaking Unit 2 on colors. "How can colors be useful?"

I also asked you to write a brief paragraph on a topic of your choice. You need to write a topic sentence with a controlling idea and 3 ways you would support that sentence.

Have a great weekend!

Homework for next week:

ECI- Class Recap 3/25

Great to see you today ECI!

Don't forget that your homework is:

Reading and Writing
Identify the Main Idea pages 9-10.
Reading 2 pages 12-13. Main Ideas and Details.

Lastly, write a topic sentence using this picture. Please think before you write. Include a main idea and a controlling idea.

Good luck!

Do you hear the people sing?

Ok...so my blog title is a reference to Les Miserables...which was the French Revolution...not the American Revolution. But can you still feel the anger boiling up within the colonists as we march toward the American Revolution?

Last class we talked about some of the major events that led up to the American Revolution. During class you did some research and thought about:

1. Why did the event happen?
2. What happened during this event?
3. What happened as a result of this event?

In history, almost everything happens for a reason and leaves in it wake the recipe for another event. We as historians have to learn how to connect these dots.

Please don't forget to send me your main bullet points (main ideas and details) to me by Thursday. Be prepared to talk about your event in class on Friday to help us understand why those events are significant and how they led the colonists into war with Britain.

See you Friday!

Participation and Homework

Hello ECI classes!

I sure enjoyed my first two weeks with you.  I am looking forward to more time speaking English and learning more about you. I hope that you come to class prepared and ready to try and communicate only in English.

As you know, you have options on what you can do for homework. See the syllabus.

Read the syllabus for homework ideas.

You should be doing 2 assignments per week to fulfill your homework and participation obligation. You can only receive credit for 2 assignments per week. Sometimes, I assign mandatory homework assignments, but mostly you are responsible for your homework choices.

So far, I haven't received much. Only about four students have logged onto www.qonlinepractice.com and completed an assignment. However, you did complete a mandatory assignment in the form of 10 sentences turned in via Google Drive.

Remember, doing homework is your choice. However, if you choose not to do any assignments your grade will suffer.

I can see when you do an exercise and when you don't. ã… ã…

In short? Start participating inside AND OUTSIDE of my classroom. Your grade depends on it! :)

Perspectives

Hello History Class!

Thanks again for another wonderful class with thoughtful conversation and your undivided attention. I hope that my lecture was informative and interesting. Remember, on Friday, I will ask you to speak more than I did on Tuesday. We will discuss our thoughts on the readings we have done so far and talk about our thoughts on Columbus and the New World.

As you know, on the right side of my blog you can see several links for you. Here you can see readings, my presentations, other websites I think are good and a spot called "Misc. History Assignments." I will put .pdfs here that we might use in class. Now you can see a .pdf about your thoughts on Columbus. You can use this to help you prepare for class on Friday. We will discuss this question and start writing an essay about our personal thoughts on the question.

One thing I want you to think about as we look at America's early history is to try to see how it plays out from all perspectives. What were the Indians thinking and feeling at this time? Why did they respond to the Europeans as they did? Also, what were the Europeans thinking and feeling at this time? Why did they respond to the New World and its Natives as they did? It is important to think about historical events from all perspectives: the one who writes about it and the one who lived through it but may not have had the opportunity to write about it.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I will try to post here when there is relevant information for you about class!

Hello ECG!

Hello to my ECG classes! It was very nice to meet you on Tuesday at 12 and 3, Wednesday at 4:30 and Thursday at 3:00. (Class codes: 1578, 1727, 1455, 2609) I will see you again next week at the same time as before.

Three things to remember.

1. Get books.

They look like this.

2. Connect on Facebook

Though it is not required, please consider connecting with me on Facebook. I post new blogs and important reminders there. It is also easy to contact me there.

3. Be prepared

Lastly, always be prepared for my class. Be prepared to speak in English, study hard and have fun. I enjoy having a free classroom, but I also expect my students to show respect for their co-students and their teacher. That means trying your best in every class and every activity. Sleeping, being on your phone, showing up without your book is absolutely unacceptable.

We can work hard and play hard and have fun doing it! See you later!

Columbus Arrives

Hello History Students!

I was very impressed with your contributions to class today! Great job! Let's continue having good discussions during our lecture time.

Remember to read Columbus's letter about the New World. That will be our starting point on Tuesday.

Also check this out!

We can learn a lot from art if we take a moment to analyze it. Look at this famous painting of Christopher Columbus arriving in the New World. What can we learn from it?

American neoclassicist painter John Vanderlyn (1775–1852) was commissioned by Congress in June 1836 to paint the Landing of Columbus for the Capitol Rotunda.

Think about these questions.

What does this painting tell you about the arrival of Columbus? Look at the details. What are the men holding? How are they standing? What are they looking at? What do you see in the background and foreground?

It is a painting done almost 350 years after Columbus landed in the New World, but it does say a lot about the period and how people in the 1830s might have remembered Columbus.

Take a look. What do you see?

2. Get GMAIL

Though it is not required, please consider getting a gmail account to make our writing assignments run smoothly. You are children of the internet and computer age. I will not accept the excuse that you cannot figure it out! It is possible to exchange papers using your non-gmail account, but having a gmail account will make it much easier for you. Here is a brief explanation of Google Drive. I will explain more in class.

North American History: Day 1

Hello class! Welcome to Spring 2015!

We are focusing on American history from the beginning until the late 1800s. There are many things to cover during that time period. We must do our best in order to cover the most important events and themes,

Please come to class having done the reading I assigned in the previous class and be ready to discuss it, ask questions about it, and think about it.

You can access our online readings with links to the right of this blog.

For Friday read "America Before Columbus and the Problem Of History," from Richard Middleton and Anne Lombard, Colonial America: A History to 1763.

There are lots of resources online that can help you understand the material we are covering. Please feel free to do your own search. We will use my reading assignments as a reference point.

I will also post my presentations on the right side of the blog for your convenience.

See you Friday!
